Alex Ward's SEALED IN is one of those tricks that drives me crazy. On one hand, the effect it creates is not bad. To a layman I'm sure it appears to be quite baffling. The explanation given is barely adequate. And it's relatively cheap.
On the other hand...
Where does one start? I'm sure Alex Ward is a lovely person, but he barely looks 20. I'm certainly not suggesting that great magic can't be created by someone with little experience, but it's quite obvious to this wizard that Alex hasn't been performing this effect long enough to master it. The demonstration he provides is in the typically awful street magic fashion of a one-off freak out. "Look at this. Now look at THIS.!" It's a puzzle to the onlooker in the video and he will no doubt remember the puzzle for a long time. But will he remember Alex? No. But don't take my word for it, watch the demo for yourself.
The explanation is all over the place. Alex and his friend, Chris, sit in a studio and giggle their way through the "work." Chris isn't properly amplified, so we hear as much as we can through Alex's microphone. You'll have to prepare a bottle every time you want to perform this little ditty. The preparation is a bit of a challenge. I'm not sure everyone who views this will feel it's worth it. The handling is stupidly simple. The bottle is shown empty and sealed, and then a coin is slammed into it. Finally, the participant is asked to twist off the cap, proving it was sealed.
I think the method that is used is somewhat clever, but it's not revolutionary. So my real question is the same one I ask myself all the time, who is this for? Who will be able to carry around a crate of prepared bottles to perform this? A street or restaurant magician? Nope. How about a stand-up performer? Too small to see. Friends, this falls squarely into the category of "things to film for Youtube." And if that doesn't make you want to vomit, it's probably your bedtime.
