Tel's Bells

Terry Herbert

(Based on 3 reviews)

This marvelous mechanical brass bell can be slotted into lots of programs and there are a few ideas for any kind of comedy show !The basic idea is neat , you take a bell and ring it , then when you give it to someone else , they will try to ring it but with NO SOUND !!! A classical comedy bit from the British magic comedian Terry Herbert. This is so funny , your audience will cry !!! for both Children's and adult entertainers.

Here are some idea that comes with the bell:

For children´s: before a birthday party , you ask the child to get all his /her friends to settle down , and to act like their teacher at school when they ring the bell to get attention. You ring the bell to show him how to do it , then give him the bell to ring to get everyone´s attention. Of course when he rings the is no sound ..... a little louder you ask and take it from him and demonstrate...
For adults : You show the bell to an adult man telling him that this bell has been developed to check how many hormones he has... as much the bell rings as many sexy hormones you have ... You of course ring the bell out loud... you give it to the spectator - he try and... Nothing - no sound!
Three bell Monte effect... Very expensive , but what an effect!!!
And many other great ideas included!!!!

I purchased Tel's Bells in the hope of including it in a show I was doing several years ago. That hope vanished when I received the prop and began rehearsing with it. Because of the placement of the gimmick and the force required to operate it, there was no way to grasp the bell in a natural manner and make it work. In addition, I discovered that if the bell was shaken vigorously enough, which an enthusiastic volunteer might conceivably do, the supposed-to-be-silent bell rang! That was the death knell for any desire to use this prop in front of an audience. I ended up returning Tel's Bells to the place of purchase.

Caveat emptor, folks.

I enjoyed the previous review by Steve and believe that he said it all about right. I have not had trouble with the rim and have not felt the need to widen it. However, it is a bit stiff. I agree that the bell should be put away after using it so that it can't be played with. While it is not a trick, it can enhance tricks and make them better by introducing humor - just like the break-away wand or the clatter box. One thing I object to is the picture in the ad. The hand holding the bell is clearly not ringing it as it cannot be rung from that position. The ad doesn't say that it is being rung but somehow the picture and text gives that impression. A fun effect that I love to perform. It always gets lots of laughs with children or adults.

Tells bells is a funny gag and well worth the money due to it's construction but it is NOT a trick!

If doing it for adults don't leave the bell lying around, as soon as they fail take it from them, as it only takes a few minutes for people to work out how to operate the clanger.

I love this item but I gave it two and a half stars less than it deserves as I had to take it to my local engineer who put on a wider rim on the operating mechanism as I found it very hard to operate because of the narrow rim that it has and the tight spring, my fingers just kept on slipping off especially on hot days and also I had to grip so tight to stop the slipping that it hurt my fingers. Now it's a lot better.

Why the operating 'rim' couldn't have just been made a little wider in manufacture beats me. So I gave it less stars than it deserves as I just gett fed up having to 'repair' items that I buy.

But otherwise a good item.
