Even though I live in Canada, I often order from Penguin.
I find the prices competitive, especially when items are on sale.
I have had nothing but positive interactions with them via email or on the phone. Any problems with a products was dealt with immediately.
The best part these days is that shipping is free to Canada regardless of the amount that I spent.
Top notch company in my opinion.

This review is about getting in contact with someone on the phone. Every time I call them a recorded message says they are short staffed and can’t answer the call. They say leave a message and we will return your call tomorrow. I’ve left 3 messages on there answering machine with info on how to call me back or email me. They never call back or try to contact me in any way.

I refer to Penguin Magic a lot. They are the place I order from mainly. They have amazing customer service and great products at reasonable prices. The most unique thing about them is they will make a video of them packaging your order and send the video to you via email. They are one of the best online shop you can and will ever find. I will recommend them any day of the week.

**BE SURE TO READ THE BOTTOM FOR AN UPDATE ON THIS REVIEW**

There are two things that prevent me from ordering from Penguin after having done so once. I will say that what I ordered was only an accessory, the price was only $.10 lower than any competitors (not that it really mattered here) and the service was satisfactory.

Now, there are three things that prevent me from dealing with this company. The first and in my opinion, the worst offense, is that every time I have ever asked for descriptions or certain details (not the MO, of course) about a product, they have never been able to give me a definitive answer. That number is well beyond a couple dozen times. If you are working in a retail/service business, you should be able to answer those types of questions. It shows that a staff has a thorough knowledge of the products it purveys. I understand that in some industries, it is not possible for one person to know about every single item, but there should be someone on staff that is familiar with it. *I should note that the questions I asked were for the most part pretty basic. Others dealt with aesthetics which would have affected their efficiency in relation to the intended use of the product.

My second gripe is with them is the quality and accuracy of some of their teaching downloads. I will start this mini-rant by stating that I am not the biggest fan of downloads except where the download is something that is very hard to come across in print or very hard to find. I prefer books first, DVDs second.

Some time ago a friend of mine sent me a video file from Penguin (it was free to all, including the public) in which a man taught "a clean, deceptive and thorough handling of an ROV coin vanish". What a load of crap! The information was absolutely WRONG. If it was not the worst handling and teaching of an ROV I have ever seen, then it was most certainly the second worst. I have seen some of the other videos they have released, the content of which was not very well taught. In fact, I would go so far as to say they are/were misleading, or that they teach the material/technique incorrectly.

The third problem I have is that I have noticed knock-off items being sold on their site. Whether they actually stock and ship them I cannot say, but then again if they do not stock and ship these items, why would it be on the site? I only support original creators. I can understand that some performers are on a budget and not able to afford a $400 item, but it is because of these creators (more often than not) that we even have these wonderful effects/props available. If nobody supports them, they will stop contributing eventually. Besides, when you buy a cheap knock-off, you absolutely get what you pay for.

My second and third issues were previously mentioned, but I just figured I would add them as my two cents.

All in all, I cannot say anything bad about their service; they are prompt to respond, but they are just not as knowledgeable as they should be.

Their pricing is among the best you will find in the industry, but personally I will pay full retail price for an item from a dealer (whether it is my first time dealing with them or not) if they know their products well and can answer questions about them. At least make an effort to get an answer.

I know many people have gotten great service from this dealer and will continue to get the same great service from this dealer. I too was happy with the one transaction I made with them, however, I cannot look past my issues that were stated above. If they ever fix those issues, I will have absolutely no problem dealing with them in the future.

**UPDATE AS OF MAY 1st, 2015**

Despite my earlier issues with Penguin, I have since had further interaction with them and they have actually come quite a way, but they still have a ways to go.

They seem to have gotten better at knowing more about the products that they carry, but for the most part it seems to apply to newer items on the market. This still does not cover the older items, but it is a vast improvement from the past on their part.

In 2014 they bought the rights to Elmwood Magic products from Paul Richards in order to keep producing and selling them. This year in 2015, they also teamed up with Paul to produce the Live Magic Expo, which in my experience was very well put together as a result of that collaboration. The staff on hand from Penguin was very knowledgeable and as they always have been, very friendly. They also seemed eager to learn more about their items and their products, which is a good thing.

Ihave been dealing with them for a couple of years and they have the best prices I have seen. THe cheapest shipping and can ship by Fedex in two days overseasfor the cheapest price I have ever seen
THe custumer service is great. I bought The "Thing" and the box came cracked slightly. They immediatly sent me another one by Fedex. THis is only one example of the great service I have recieved.

I bought the Rainbow Rabbit Production magic trick for $120 odd dollars only to have it arrive at my overseas location with a MISSING piece! No one from Penguin Magic is dealing with my complaint in a reputable way, they haven't responded at all! Will be taking it further.

They have been excellent to work with. They take PayPal and the Lectures they have had have been great. You can ask questions and even get an answer and since I live in the middle of nowhere it's been really nice to get to see a lecture. The one time I had a problem with a shipment they were quick to make it right. I would recommend them to anyone.

I have ordered from Penguin....lets see....2 times,and yeah..it was good. One thing I do not understand ....and it's a big thing for me.....WHY DO THEY NOT EXCEPT PAY-PAL.. I just do not like to give my credit card number to too many people so I have gotten use to ordering with pay pal, but there are a few dealers that do not exept pay pal like penguin so they do not get my business. I have talked to others that feel the same way. I shop MJM, They're great!

I've been dealing with Penguin magic for several years now, and I do mean dealing...I spend lot'sa bucks...and I perform professionally with every prop and routine purchased thru them...and yes there are ACTUAL DEALS that go on always giving their customer benefit..and just how often do you get a response from one of the OWNERS of the company ? I did when a order was taking a little longer than expected to arrive
which had me freaked because that had never happend with them before...I got the product AND a gift of magic (my choice ) for the wait...these guys and gals at Penguin should be proud of their work and business ethic

I have been dealing with Penguin for about 9 years now. Mostly good- especially as I am overseas. Their shipping is the most reasonable I have found. Only one problem, and I can't really blame Penguin for it- a Tango folding coin I got was not made correctly and would not fold- NO CUTS! Too hard to return it as would cost almost as much to ship it back as it cost to get it....
Heard a lot about them having problems with various artists and such, but have no personal experience with the issue.

I've never had a problem with Penguin magic.

Ask a question and you get a response in hours.

Place an order and its shipped quickly and at a reasonable shipping price.

The prices are great and the service is top notch.

I don't know why Scott gave Penguin such a poor reviww. It seems it was reviewed not based on its performance and service, But because of something no one knows the full story on.

I highly recommend Penguin and will continue to use them.

It is sad magicians, particularly young magicians, first exposure to magic is from Penguin. Not only are they willing to offer products that are not ethically on the market, but more often then not are sold a piece of garbage that would never be sold in a Brick and Mortar shop! It is a shame that time and time again, someone at Penguin will see an effect with commercial promise and rush to create an Instant Download. Not only disrespecting the original artist, but often times ripping off the person who downloaded the trick since the real work is probably not known or taught. Save your money and buy from a real magic shop that can offer real advice and for that matter buy a real magic book!

Hey, it's just not right to ding a good dealer because of someone else’s disagreement. What happened between Sankey and Penguin, I'm sure that story has two sides just like any other story.
I don't know what happened between Sankey and Penguin. I do know that I've been buying from Penguin for over a year now and I've never had any cause for complaint. They've got great products for great prices and great customer service. They have always responded promptly to any emails I’ve ever sent.
The only reason I wouldn't give them a perfect score is because if I need something specific I’ll usually have to go to a bigger site. But I always check Penguin first.

I've been ordering penguin products for over 5 years now and have just decided to stop....After hearing about there cheating of Jay Sankey I just can't get myself to order their stuff. There are better more honest companies out there that don't take advantage and havemore integrity. Save your money!
