Overview

Ultimate Secrets Revealed by Jay Crowe is a collection of 10 esoteric ideas which straddles the line between the clever and the impractical. Unlike those that peddle their “shamanistic” approaches to ones who would like to have such powers, these effects are based on the use of materials that are actually available and applies those materials to create an out of the ordinary experience for the spectator. However, as the concepts proposed in this “book” seem to be doable, I have my doubts as to whether or not these effects are actually performed on a regular basis and how consistent the success ratio actually is if they are performed.

Effect

I would not normally list the effects in a book because usually they are listed in the ad copy or the writer is very well known and has a track record of delivering high quality publications. However, since there is very little listed in the ad copy, the effects are as follows:

A past memory is predicted by the performer
The spectator sends an actual email by using just their minds
Shoelaces magically change color
Sunglasses appear on the portrait of George Washington on a $1 bill
Reveal the serial number on a bill just taken from a spectator’s wallet
An ACAAN effect
Produce fire from your fingertips
A spider drawn on a balloon pops the balloon
A cellophane butterfly comes to life
Rose petals fly into the performer’s hand

Method

The serial number reveal and the ACCAN is nothing new and requires standard magician’s props. The rest require the investment in niche products you can find online. Although the application of these products are clever, the expense and or its application in the effect which may prove to be unreliable if not dangerous for the impression each of these effects will make. Some of the products are odd but available, such as scented ink, assistants waiting at a computer, UV color changing items, thermochromic ink, barrier gel, caustic solvents, hygroscopic cellophane and magnetic aerosol spray. The investment in all of these products not only would make performing these routines ridiculously expensive but inconvenient as well.

Product Quality

For some reason, the author seems compelled to “sell” the idea at the beginning of each effect. Statements such as “I love this one”, “People go crazy”, “This is killer”, all send a signal to me that these are not performed regularly or they are just concepts. I never read anything by any known performer that starts out that way. The booklet has 37 pages but the type is large and there are huge blank spaces separating paragraphs and effects. It probably could have been printed on 12 pages. The routines are basic premise and a little dialogue. The explanations are incredibly brief.

Ad Copy Integrity

The most egregious fault is that every effect requires you to buy something that is either difficult to obtain, very expensive or dangerous to carry or use. All but two effects require DYI. None of these points are stated in the ad copy. If one purchased this booklet expecting to perform most of these right away, they will be woefully disappointed. Finally, the ad copy states that there are 12 effects. This is not true, there are 12 chapters but one is a prologue and one is an epilogue which brings the effect total down to 10.
