Overview

The first known use of a book as a book test was by Girolamo Scotto and performed for the Emperor of Austria in 1572. Since then, almost every conceivable manner of a book test has been created. Book tests have been made out of poems, magazines, comic books, novels, love cards, cook books and many, many more. The Manga Book test by Michael O’Brien is another version added to hundreds that already exist. The Manga Book Test is new but not novel. If you know absolutely nothing about book tests then maybe this will give you a small glimpse into this incredible mentalism piece but if you have any idea as to what book tests are, then move along, there’s nothing to see here.

Effect

The performer takes out a Manga comic book and flips through the pages to show the spectators that all the pages are different. Then as he fans the pages again, he asks a spectator to say “stop” at which point he does. The participant is then directed to remember a word, picture or some sort of identifiable piece of information on a page. That now thought of information locked up in the spectator’s mind is revealed by the performer.

Method

The method(s) used are nothing more than what has been used by mentalists for time immemorial. There is nothing unique or different being offered here in this small compilation of tried and true techniques that anyone in the mentalism game has not seen, heard or read about. Without getting into any specific methods, all of these can be seen in basic mentalism videos.

Product Quality

The book is comprised of 65 pages filled with large type and large spaces between paragraphs. This is just a guess but in a normal font typically used in paperbacks I would imagine it would total 35 pages. The book is filled with methods already discussed ad-nuaseam elsewhere. In addition, towards the end of the book he suggests other book tests by other creators to buy also. This alone I found odd because it adds nothing to the value of his writing. It seems like it is there just for filler to add to the page count. There is a link to videos where he demonstrates some of the “moves” which is continuously updated.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy extolls the virtues of this “incredible” masterpiece and even states these methods can be used with other book test. I would assume that if you already own other books test, they have their own methods. Though not misleading, the ad copy sounds more like hype than anything else.
