The World Magic Shop filmed Arron Jones’ lecture at The Session in England and has now released the footage on a DVD titled “The Magicianary Position.” Before going into the DVD, a note about the title: it has nothing to do with the contents. The title is a reference to a gag made during the filming. It has no connection to the type of material taught, nor to Mr. Jones’ approach to performing.
The DVD contains five routines and methods: an impromptu version of the Anniversary Waltz that plays well on stage, a utility method for vanishing a coin sealed in an envelope by the spectator, an interesting card to spectator’s pocket, a 3 phase tic tac toe prediction, and a torn and restored business card that leaves the spectator with the performer’s card in an impossible state.
The explanations are clear and sufficient, though, because it was filmed at a lecture, the detail isn’t what it could be. Additionally, there is little or no editing of the footage, and as a result there is a great deal of dead time, which Mr. Jones himself even acknowledges.
In terms of quality, the contents are a mixed bag. While all of the material is practical and useable, there was a lack of thought in some of the routines. In certain cases the methods are heavy handed or suffer from weak construction. While this doesn’t mean the magic isn’t worth performing, it does mean the effects aren’t as polished and effective as they could be, leaving the viewer with work to do to make them as powerful and entertaining as possible. At the same time, in other cases Mr. Jones’ additions to existing routines and the details of his own creations are clever, thoughtful, and worth applying to other routines in one’s repertoire. I just wish the same level of thought and effort were put into everything taught on the DVD.
While each of the routines on this disc has something to commend it, none are terribly revolutionary or tread on dramatically new ground. Nevertheless, the content is practical and clearly has been performed in the real world, so, particularly for less polished and experienced performers, there is value in studying the routines and methods. Consider the specific effects and ideas taught. If one or more appeals to you, this could be a resource worth exploring.
