4 Dimensional Trunk

Tenyo

(Based on 2 reviews)
American magic creator J. C. Doty became famous for his production of a full-sized bowling ball from a thin briefcase that was much too small to contain the ball. 4-Dimensional Trunk is a light-weight version of the same trick that enables you to perform this powerful effect at any time. A plastic golf ball is included in this package so that you can start performing right away. You may choose to substitute the plastic ball for a real golf ball that you supply.

English instructions included.

Overview

4-Dimensional Trunk like many Tenyo items, is a quick, quirky and curious novelty that is intriguing to some and detestable to others. Deviously clever but infuriatingly cheap looking, many magicians have a love / hate relationship with these offbeat magical wonders. 4-Dimentional Trunk is a mini version of J.C. Doty’s Bowling Ball from Briefcase trick. If you like surprise magic and you don’t mind devoting some pocket space, 4-Dimensional Trunk can be used in multiple settings.

Effect

The performer takes out a small plastic mini briefcase and talks about how he loves to relax playing golf. He opens the case and removes a golf tee and marker and closes the case. Oh, he forgot the most important thing, the golf ball. He reopens the case and removes a golf ball from the case that obviously just empty and too thin for the ball to fit in.

Method

The method requires the gimmicked case and a fairly decent presentation. The case is designed to accommodate the items and will allow you to open it once to show only the tee and marker, reclose the case and then remove the ball. Of course, one can use the case as a business card case and remove a card, close it and then remove the ball. With a little thought, one can come up with a few interesting ideas.

Product Quality

The product is made out of plastic. It design is well thought out and being able to open it and reveal the small tee and marker, reclose it and produce the ball is a nice touch. The English instructions are two pages long and must be downloaded from the Tenyo site. The instructions are well illustrated and very clear since they were written by Steve Cohen. This is a perfect example of an opportunity Tenyo missed in making their props a touch nicer. The case could have been made to look nicer with silver accents but to keep costs down it is all black. I’m sure many would pay for a better looking prop if it cost just a few dollars more. The prop comes with a plastic golf ball but can be replaced with a real golf ball if desired.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is accurate and the product performs similarly to the original full size model.

The performer opens a tiny handheld briefcase to reveal a golf tee and a ball marker with not much room for anything else. The tiny briefcase is then closed and reopened and a golf ball impossibly appears. Without bending the laws of physics, the golf ball cannot fit inside the slim and tiny black briefcase.

The promotional video is accurate and this trick is easy to perform, although you will have to watch your angles. You cannot be surrounded during this presentation. The spectator will assume the golf ball is either made of foam or fake -- it is not -- and can be handed out. The briefcase cannot be handed out, but the heat will be on the ball. While this trick is fun and can produce good reactions and laughs from spectators, this will not be one of your top 5 carry along tricks. At $37, it is a bit expensive, but is still a solid trick.
