This is a massive 3 Disc set that is loaded with stuff for the card enthusiast.

Now, unlike the John Carey DVDs, you won’t find too much to add to your strolling repertoire. Many of the effects require a full deck set up, table space about the size of a large close up pad. There might be a few things workings pros will like to keep set up in their cases for set close up shows however.

The big exception is The Fingerprint Trick. This has been in my strolling work since I saw Solomon teach it at a lecture earlier this year, and it’s a worker’s dream. No set up, and it happens in the audiences hands!

His Simplex Oil & Water is also very clear, impromptu, and even has a nice relevant story with it. Also, Blank Jazz Aces is very deceptive, and is a great way to end a close up card set.

The biggest negatives I can say is that Solomon is a creator, not a performer, and doesn’t take certain things into consideration that a working pro would (like table space for example). Some of the effects are unclear to a lay audience, and would only be of interest to magicians. For example, he has a three phase version of the 21 Card Trick. While it will be deceptive to magicians who have seen the original method, it will just be a mathematical catastrophe in the real world.

At the end of the day, you will get something of use on this set, even though you may have to do some digging.

Chicago card expert David Solomon's new DVD, "The Card Solutions of Solomon," is well worth your consideration. In fact, it's one of the better magic DVDs that I've ever reviewed.

First off, it's from Big Blind Media, so you know it's a high-quality production. The lighting, sound, and design are all very good. More and more often magic DVDs are being overrun with time-consuming filler material (such as outtakes) and self-indulgent design sequences, so it's a real treat to find a product where the attention to detail has been properly placed. The three discs contain over 3 hours of material, and none of that time is wasted.

A large part of the credit for the information-packed nature of this collection goes to Solomon himself. Decades of teaching card magic has honed Solomon's pedagogical abilities to such a fine degree that he can convey a complicated card trick in just a few minutes. He's not glossing over things, he's speaking to you as a fellow card magician. (So if you're not already skilled in this area, be prepared to do some homework.) I wish more videos would treat viewers as if they were smart, and acknowledge that DVDs can be easily paused and rewound to study and review what's being taught. It's refreshing to find one that isn't marred by a plodding pace and unnecessary repetition.

While some of the tricks, in my opinion, fall into the "magic for magicians" category, most of them would be good for laymen, and all of them are interesting and fun to study. There are also a handful of segments with Solomon and John Bannon discussing various topics, such as how they, with Simon Aronson, collaborate during weekly sessions.

You should be aware that some of the material isn't new, but those items that were first published in Solomon's books are expanded and refined, so even if you're already familiar with these items you'll likely learn something new. Also, at the end of the third disc, there is discussion about two commercial items, Time Warp Wallet and Gypsy Curse. If you have these, you'll find this useful. If you don't, you might be enticed to buy those too.

If you're interested in Solomon's card magic, I think you'll be happy adding this DVD to your collection. And even if you don't, consider thanking Big Blind Media for introducing such a finely produced three disc set for a reasonable price.
