3 Pieces of Silver

Klan, Rune

Vanishing Inc.

(Based on 1 review)
Rune Klan has become a public sensation for his comedy magic, but before that he was recognized by magicians as an exemplary coin technician. In 1998, a young Danish Rune Klan surfaced with a collection of coin effects unlike any that preceded it. The rules were simple: Rune used no gaffs, and seemingly only three coins. Yet with the simplest of props, he did inexplicable and visual coin tricks.

This collection contains revolutionary coin magic as difficult as it is amazing. If you're looking for a challenge and a reward, look no further.

This DVD almost wasn't. The master copy was destroyed in a fire, and the footage has been out of print for nearly a decade. Recently rediscovered and recaptured from VHS, Vanishing Inc. Magic is proud to make this neo-classic available again.

Running Time: Approximately 60 mins

"This video almost wasn't." What an interesting and intriguing statement. Once you read the reason why (the master copy was destroyed in a fire), it makes sense.

As a coin magic specialist, I for one am very grateful that this was able to be released. Anyone performing coin magic for more than six months has heard of Rune Klan, and rightfully so - he is an excellent magician and an even better coin magician!

Since this video was created some time ago (1998) and was recently re-captured from VHS (remember those?!), its quality is similar to VHS. All things considered, completely forgivable. There have been many other great DVDs reproduced the same way that turned out to be excellent learning sources - for example: The George Sands homemade rope video.

The performance section of the video was clearly staged with six people at two tables eating a meal in a set-up restaurant type of location - it looked nice. Rune Klan walks up to one of the tables and introduces himself by name as the house magician, then proceeds to perform magic for them. He also performs a different set for the second table. At the end, he performs the bonus routine for some of the folks as well.

There are two sets, three effects/phases each, plus a bonus. The flow of the video is thus: You see him perform a set for one of the tables, then you watch the explanation. You then see the second set performed for the next table, then that set is explained. After that, you see the bonus effect performed and explained. The explanations are given in the same location but without the spectators.

Rune is an excellent teacher and though he was still quite young at this point, he did an excellent job of clarifying all of the sleights and moves used in each phase. The setting was interesting because you got to see him performing for a live audience, but in a set-up studio setting without the studio 'feel'. Where necessary he changed angles to make thing clearer and all of his crediting was given as he progressed through the explanations - very well done.

Set #1:
Fantasy 2 Reality - Fantasy 2 Reality, Caged Birds and Birds of the World. The presentation works very well for Rune and it is cutesy, but believable because it makes sense in a story. The presentation is easy to change if it does not suit you and your style, which it most likely will not.

Set #2:
Three Pieces of Silver - Mirage Coins, Born a Freak and Tips of Trickery. This set also has an overall theme to tie its presentation together and it is different from the first set. Again, the magic that happens makes sense and if it does not work for you, you can absolutely change it to suit your own style.'

The bonus effect: Magic Left its Footprint. This is a sort of "Shadow Coins" type of effect meant to be done on the floor with spectators looking down, rather than doing it on a table for a seated or standing audience.

The material on here will take plenty of practice to get it down smooth, but not everything is difficult. It is more for the intermediate coin worker and not for the beginner.

The effects truly live up to the name of the disc: 3 pieces of Silver - because that is exactly what they use. The only other thing used is a coin purse and for one of the effects, a cup saucer is borrowed, though other similar items can readily substitute if you use your imagination.

The routines that are performed and explained on this DVD can also be found in his book, "Rune's World," written by Joshua Jay of Vanishing Inc. Magic (who also produced and re-released this DVD). If you have the book or have read it, you already know the kind of stuff that Rune Klan performs. It is nice to see these coin effects/routines from the book performed.

The menu is well-laid out and easy to navigate.

The lighting was good and for having been copied from a VHS, the audio and video quality were good - it was as clear as you ever got on VHS. Anyone who has ever used or watched a great deal of VHS tapes will remember those spots where the film itself accidentally got creased or bunched up and caused the video on screen to go haywire and jump all over the place. If you transferred that footage to another tape, the glitches would also transfer - that does not happen at all on this disc.

Anyone that is serious about doing coin magic would do well to have this DVD in their library because even if you do not use any of the material, you will be treated to many other moves and sleights that will work equally well in other effects and routines. You will also get to see what a well-structured routine looks like.

If you want some excellent coin magic that requires no gimmicks, takes up very little pocket space and looks very magical, then this DVD is for you.

Very highly recommended!
